What your tooth pain may mean

Sharp pain with sweets, cold or hot that goes away in seconds
Usually a cavity or sensitive teeth. Often fixed with a filling or sensitivity treatment.
Pain with hot or cold that lingers for minutes
The nerve inside the tooth is inflamed. This often needs a root canal.
Throbbing pain that is worse at night or when lying down
Often an infected nerve. A root canal usually stops it.
Pain when you bite or chew
A cracked tooth, a filling that sits too high, or infection at the root tip.
Swollen gum or face, a bad taste, or a pimple on the gum
A dental abscess (infection). It needs treatment soon.
Ache across several upper back teeth with a blocked nose
Can be sinus pressure rather than a tooth problem. A check-up tells them apart.

What you can do at home tonight

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water.
  • Take a painkiller you have used safely before, as directed on the pack.
  • If there is swelling, hold a cold pack on the cheek for 15 minutes at a time.
  • Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food, and chew on the other side.
  • Sleep with your head raised on an extra pillow.
  • Don't put aspirin or tobacco on the gum. It burns the gum and doesn't treat the tooth.

Home care only buys time. An infected tooth does not heal on its own, and pain that keeps coming back means the cause is still there.

Get help the same day if you have

  • Swelling of the face or jaw that is spreading
  • Fever along with the tooth pain
  • Difficulty swallowing, breathing or opening your mouth: go to a hospital emergency department right away
  • A knocked-out or badly broken tooth

How Dr. Bhavya treats tooth pain

  1. 1

    Find the cause

A quick examination and a digital X-ray show which tooth is hurting and why.

  2. 2

    Stop the pain

Often in the same visit: removing the infection or starting the root canal brings fast relief.

  3. 3

    Save the tooth

A filling, a root canal or a crown fixes the problem for the long term, so the pain doesn't come back.

Common questions

Why does my tooth hurt more at night?

When you lie down, more blood flows to your head and the pressure inside an inflamed tooth rises, so the throbbing gets worse. Night pain is a common sign that the nerve is infected, so get it checked soon.

Can tooth pain go away on its own?

Mild sensitivity can settle. But pain from an infected nerve often stops for a while and then returns worse, sometimes with swelling, because the nerve has died and the infection is spreading. Pain that disappears is not always a good sign.

Will antibiotics cure my tooth pain?

No. Antibiotics can calm a spreading infection, but they cannot reach the infected nerve inside the tooth, so the pain comes back. The tooth itself needs treatment, such as a root canal. Take antibiotics only when a dentist or doctor prescribes them.

Which painkiller is safe for a toothache?

Use one you have taken safely before and follow the dose on the pack. If you have stomach, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant, or take other medicines, ask a doctor or pharmacist first. Painkillers only hide the pain; the tooth still needs treatment.
