Root canal treatment in Ahmedabad: what happens and how long it takes
A root canal removes the infected nerve inside a tooth, stops the pain and lets you keep your own tooth. With modern numbing it feels much like getting a filling. Dr. Bhavya Soni, a root canal specialist (MDS endodontist), has done more than 1,500 of them.
- Painless, with gentle numbing
- Often finished in one visit
- Cost explained before we start
- 1,500+ root canals done

Do you need a root canal? Common signs
- Strong toothache, especially when you chew or bite
- Pain with hot or cold drinks that stays for a while afterwards
- Toothache that wakes you up at night
- Swelling of the gum or face, or a small pimple on the gum
- A tooth that has turned dark after an injury
- A deep cavity, or a cracked or broken tooth
Only a check-up and an X-ray can confirm it. Sometimes a simple filling is enough, and you will be told honestly.
What happens during a root canal
- 1
Check-up and X-ray
Dr. Bhavya examines the tooth and takes a digital X-ray to see how far the infection has gone. You hear the plan and the cost before anything starts.
- 2
Numbing
The tooth is numbed with a gentle injection. Most patients feel only pressure, not pain.
- 3
Cleaning inside the tooth
The infected nerve is removed and the tiny canals inside the root are cleaned and shaped, under magnification, with rotary instruments.
- 4
Sealing
The cleaned canals are filled and sealed so bacteria cannot get back in.
- 5
Rebuilding the tooth
A filling closes the tooth. Back teeth usually need a crown (cap) afterwards to protect them from cracking.
How many visits does a root canal take?
Many root canals are finished in one sitting of about 45 to 90 minutes. If there is a lot of infection or swelling, the tooth is cleaned and medicated first and completed at a second visit, usually a few days later.
Dr. Bhavya will tell you on the first day which applies to your tooth.
What decides the cost of a root canal
The cost depends on which tooth it is (a front tooth has one canal, a back tooth three or more), how complex the canals are, and whether a crown is needed afterwards.
You get a clear, honest estimate after the check-up and before any treatment begins, so there are no surprises. Call or WhatsApp to ask about your tooth.
After the root canal
- Mild soreness for two to three days is normal and usually settles with a common painkiller.
- Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final filling or crown is done.
- Brush and floss as usual.
- A well-done root canal with a good filling or crown can last many years, often for life.
Why see a specialist for your root canal?
An endodontist is a dentist with three extra years of training (MDS) focused on saving teeth. Dr. Bhavya Soni holds an MDS in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, works under magnification, and has done more than 1,500 root canals, including difficult back teeth and redoing root canals that failed elsewhere.
Root canal or removing the tooth? Read the comparisonCommon questions
Is a root canal painful?
No. The tooth is fully numbed first, so you feel pressure but not pain. The pain people fear comes from the infection before treatment; the root canal is what takes it away.
Can a root canal be done in one day?
Often, yes. Many root canals are completed in a single sitting of 45 to 90 minutes. A badly infected or swollen tooth may need a second visit a few days later.
What does RCT mean?
RCT is short for root canal treatment: cleaning out the infected nerve inside a tooth and sealing it, so you keep the tooth instead of having it removed.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth (molars and premolars) usually do, because a tooth becomes more brittle after a root canal and a crown protects it from cracking. Front teeth often need only a filling.
Is it better to remove the tooth instead?
Removing a tooth can look cheaper today, but the gap usually needs an implant or a bridge later, which costs more. When a tooth can be saved, keeping it with a root canal is almost always the better choice.
